Crimson Racing

crimson_racing_logo_whitebCrimson Racing is a student design team under The University of Alabama’s Mechanical Engineering Department. The team works to design, build, and manufacture a formula style race car which competes annually in Formula SAE competitions. The competition focuses on exposing students to a businesslike environment of the design and manufacture of a production vehicle. The students learn how to interact in a company atmosphere in order to meet deadlines and collaborate with other students. The competition requires the students to not only design and build a car, but also try to sell the car as if it were a real production vehicle. This allows for more than engineering majors (business, art, etc.) to get involved in the process.

The team competes annually at Michigan International Speedway in the Formula SAE Michigan competition. The competition hosts 120 teams from around the world. In the past four years, the team has improved from 98th place to 17th place in the rankings, and the team plans to continue this improvement in the upcoming years. The 2017 Formula SAE Michigan competition was held on May 10-13. The Crimson Racing team is ready to continue our path to the top of the competition in 2018. The team also hopes to compete in the Formula SAE Lincoln competition for the first time in nearly a decade.

The team provides a monthly newsletter to anyone who is interested in learning more about the team. This website also provides updates to the team’s progress or you can follow the team through any of our social media pages found below. If you ever want to learn more about the team, please send us an email.

No experience is required to join the team as many of our members started with no previous knowledge. The team is divided into several smaller, more focused sub groups that are in charge of individual parts of the car. Sub group leaders work with new students to develop their knowledge of the car and prepare them to lead the group in future years.
